I want to start by saying “Thank You” to the entire team at Electronic Storage Corporation for their dedication and support even before we purchased the ViTL product. Instead of pushing for a quick sale, they invested significant time explaining and demonstrating how their product would meet our needs.
As a 30-year Engineer in AS/400 IBMi, Power, I appreciate a reliable product like ViTL that works well and gets the job done. We had been backing up our production systems to a shared solution from our cloud provider, but we were ready for a change and to have our own solution.
Our environment consists of 18 LPARS, a mix of IBMi and AIX, with 32TB of storage running under a clustered VIOS environment. ViTL has been a significant advantage due to its ease of operation and monitoring. Moreover, because ViTL is VM-friendly, we could implement it with our existing infrastructure without needing to purchase new dedicated hardware, just a few smaller items. We wanted a complete solution without additional costs for extra components.
While every product has pros and cons, LaserVault ViTL is much simpler to use than others, yet it offers the powerful capability of seamless Virtual Tape Backups in parallel without performance issues or significantly impacting the Windows Server. The built-in encryption and compression are particularly reassuring; in the event of theft, the virtual files are secure and cannot be restored or accessed by unauthorized individuals—a theory we tested and confirmed.
Personally, I find ViTL easier to operate than a large competitor’s VTL, making it more straightforward and less time-consuming for our IT staff. ViTL has proven to be robust and reliable, and the support from the LaserVault Support Center, which is local and very responsive, has been excellent. At the end of the day, I have peace of mind knowing our data is protected and can be restored in an emergency.
