Backup-Enhanced Deduplication for IBM i
As data volumes continue to grow, managing backups efficiently is more important than ever. BEdupe (Backup-Enhanced Deduplication) helps by eliminating duplicate data, reducing storage needs, and lowering IT costs.
Designed for IBM i and other host systems, BEdupe works seamlessly with ViTL to optimize data management, enhance data protection, and streamline IT operations.
For larger organizations, BEdupe integrates with ViTL to reduce storage costs, improve backup efficiency, and support high-volume data environments. For small to mid-sized businesses, it provides an affordable, efficient deduplication solution that enhances backup performance without the high costs of enterprise systems.

Frequently Asked Questions
BEdupe is Backup-Enhanced Deduplication: a deduplication software feature that is part of the LaserVault ViTL virtual tape library.
Backups typically store large quantities of redundant data, which wastes storage space. BEdupe deduplication eliminates this duplicate data, reducing the amount of storage needed for backup operations, which results in significant savings in your IT costs.
Since BEdupe only stores unique data, you have more disk space available to allocate for your backups.
BEdupe reduces storage space usage without slowing down your backup by providing seamless deduplication.
BEdupe eliminates duplicate data blocks when you back up and transfer data. Once a unique block of backup data is sent offsite, it never has to be sent again.
BEdupe reduces bandwidth requirements and network traffic for replication of data.
BEdupe optimizes storage without sending additional data over your network.
BEdupe works by comparing blocks of data to detect duplicates. Once Bedupe finds a block of data that already exists in the deduplication repository, the block is replaced with a Virtual Index Pointer linking the new pseudo-block to the existing block of data.
When you restore a file, BEdupe recreates the file from its Reparse Point file, using its own special index and unique chunk store.
Being a feature of LaserVault ViTL BEdupe shares the same system requirements as ViTL. For optimum performance internally attached NVMe storage is recommended for storage of index data. Internally attached SSD is recommended for storage of block data. Internally attached spin disk can be used however performance will be slower. A minimum of 64 GB of RAM is required and more will improve performance for sites with large data sets.
